Common ailments we treat: Plantar fasciitis

Over the past several years, there has been a transition in office culture and design, with many organisations around Australia shifting away from the standard cubicle style desk spaces to ‘open concept’ work areas with both sitting and standing work stations. This trend has only continued with the home-office hybrid work model trend of late, with many people utilising a sit-stand desk from their home office.

In addition, with many Australians working more hours and the increasing demands placed on us outside of work by childcare and other responsibilities, maintaining a healthy work-life balance more often than not means that people are spending more time on their feet standing, walking and sometimes even running between the office and the home settings.  Although it’s well known that too much sitting is not conducive to good health, without proper footwear and foot care, many people can develop foot and heel pain as a result of all of the standing and ‘running around’.  Consequently, one common condition that we see at Body Therapy Chiropractic is Plantar Fasciitis, one of the most common causes of heel pain.

What is plantar fasciitis?

The Plantar Fascia is a ligament that helps to maintain the arch of the foot, and attaches from the heel of the foot to the toes. Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of this ligament. When it becomes inflamed, a patient may experience pain at the bottom of their foot.  The pain is typically worse when they first step onto their foot in the morning, and the pain may decrease, or get progressively worse throughout the day as they spend more time on their feet.  The pain is usually a strong aching type of pain that may limit the ability or enjoyment of walking. The condition is more common in runners and in people who are overweight that also spend a lot of time standing in a day.

How Can Body Therapy help?

Although pain from Plantar Fasciitis can significantly affect your ability to work, study or perform recreational activities that involve walking, a personalised treatment program from Dr. James Zheng, your local Chatswood Chiropractor that includes massage, therapeutic exercise, footwear modification recommendations, adjustments, and an analysis of foot biomechanics can get you moving again without pain!  In fact, studies have shown that over 90% of people with this condition recover with conservative treatment, such as chiropractic care.  If you are currently experiencing heel or foot pain, or would like to prevent this condition from occurring, book in a free consultation today!
